It’s a lifestyle thing: homeschooling in the Great Southern

For many families in the Southern part of Western Australia, homeschooling is a way to maintain strong family relationships.
To get a sense of the lifestyle, ABC’s Chloe Papas spoke with two very different families who currently home school their children.
Kate and her husband Mark have kept their three kids, all under 13, at home since day one. “We just thought, you know, I think we can do a better job than some poor teacher with thirty kids in a class,” she says.
There is no regular day at Kate’s house, and absolutely no structured learning routines. “Most of it is just life learning, putting them in situations where they learn regardless,” she explains. The kids each have access to the family computer, and learning via online tutorials is commonplace. “One day, Connor asked how to make an origami pterodactyl – we thought YouTube might know that one, but it did!” Kate laughs.
