Supernanny’ episode fuels debate over online courses, homeschooling, 10 January 2008, Appleton Post, Crescent, Wisconsin
Many posts took the parents to task for not properly supervising their daughters’ coursework. Others complained that the online courses they girls were taking were being unfairly labeled as homeschooling.
“It is important to know that homeschooling in the state of Wisconsin qualifies as private schooling,” said Kristi Schrampfer of Appleton who homeschools three of her children. “Online schooling is done through the public schools and different rules apply.”
Apparently the teen girls in the Supernanny episode were not enrolled with the local online charter, and a commenter at a blog (link bottom of this post) said the girls only did online schooling during the summer:
Kaukauna family targeted after ‘Supernanny’ show; some viewers accuse parents of neglect, 4 January 2007, Appleton Post, Crescent, Wisconsin
A Kaukauna couple are facing national cries of child neglect and receiving taunting e-mail after a TV stint this week but they’re contractually banned from defending themselves, a relative told The Post-Crescent.
Within minutes of the show airing, viewers from across the country flooded message boards at Supernanny’s official Web site. Online posters accused the parents of neglect, said they reported the family to the state and encouraged others to follow suit.
“Why are they not in a regular school?” she said. “The parents should be ashamed of themselves. I hope a relative intervenes and gives those girls a normal life.”
The teen daughters, who left traditional schools for one year to take online classes, returned in fall to high school, Gruetzmacher said. Their brothers are typical toddlers who throw occasional tantrums but are playful, happy children.
