Homer, an underwater robot built by five Northern Michigan homeschool students, took first place in a competition for remotely operated vehicles (ROV) in Alpena. By winning the regional meet, hosted by the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the students qualified for an international competition this June in Newfoundland. …
Along with success in the missions, judges considered factors like teams’ workmanship and the display boards they created explaining their entries.
Scott was surprised by the competition’s outcome.
“It was our first year,” he said. “I thought we would place high, but I never thought we would place first.”
