Sports and ‘home-schooling’

Louisiana High School Athletic Association has a “home-school” issue on their agenda:

“We need to make a stand, one way or the other, on how to handle home-schooled students this year,” Henderson said in the meeting held at the new LHSAA office. “If we don’t, the Legislature may step in and make one for us.

Currently, a broad LHSAA rule allows students in a home-school program approved by the Louisiana State Department of Education or a home-bound program to compete if he/she enrolls at a member school and the school agrees to record the student’s grades in its records.

The first proposal sets guidelines that home-schooled student must meet in order to gain eligibility, including guidelines on how grades can be verified.

Meanwhile, the second proposal would make home-schooled students ineligible at all its member schools. An online survey generated by the LHSAA was also distributed and it showed a 154-19 vote against allowing home-schooled students to play.

If the second item is approved, Henderson said it would make all home-schooled students currently playing for LHSAA schools ineligible.

My understanding is that LA is a private school state. The students the coaches are talking about appear to be enrolled in approved schools or school programs – public or private (as opposed to private school home educators do not submit for approval – instead a letter of intent is sent to the state.) So, why don’t the coaches want them?
