Community-based activities in North Carolina

  As the number of home-schooled students continues to climb, local businesses and government agencies are starting to take notice, offering services or supplies geared toward the home-schooling community.

  Much of the focus is on enrichment activities such as baseball, chorus or art classes. Since home schools often lack the resources and space for these activities, they are turning to the community to provide them — and the community is responding.

Another amusing-from-the-homeschooling-perspective comment is:

• "There is so much out there for home-schooling kids to do that it is easy to get caught up in too much "socialization" if you’re not careful," Balser said.

As homeschooling continues to grow, businesses probably won’t be shy about taking advantage of the expanded opportunity-hours of families who aren’t bound to a bureaucratic 9 – 5 schedule. With a critical mass of homeschooling families in an area, businesses could catch on to the ‘new market’ as they see others doing the same thing.

Come, and they will build it.
