School fosters ‘lifelong learners,’ 15 August 2007, Ventura County Star, Ventura County, California
Brenda Harari said the vision for the new school began with a desire for an alternative “progressive education” or “open classroom” type of program. “We see this as a place where we’re cultivating lifelong learners,” she said.
The concept of “lifelong learners” always gives me pause, especially as I watch my 85-year old mom figure out the joystick on her powerchair. What is the phrase “lifelong learning” supposed to mean? To whom is it supposed to apply? (hint: andragogy) Furthermore, who will it profit?
To my mind, “lifelong learning” is summed up in the slogan on the t-shirt I got at Spamalot: “I’m not dead yet.”

[note: the article does have “homeschooling” mentioned, which is how I got hold of it, but it’s California style homeschooling]
