Divorce can easily shred a child’s life. It’s hard enough. But when one of the parents decides along with the marriage, the homeschooling lifestyle is done, children’s lives are totally turned upside down. One Texas family is getting help from the Texas Homeschool Coalition (THSC) to keep some semblance of the life they know and most importantly, seemed to flourish on.
On June 7, THSC leader Tim Lambert wrote a letter to a Houston family court judge, Sherri Dean, in support of a Texas family. Judge Dean originally ordered the mother to enroll her children in public school, besides forcing a move to Houston from San Antonio.
It appears the judge softened the blow by allowing the family to continue homeschooling, but they will have to reside in Houston. The father filed for divorce.
The homeschooling life, let alone unschooling, is a matter many do not understand. Trying to explain the routine to your non-homeschooling lawyer representing you in court, let alone a judge determining how your family cycle will flow, can be and often is, frustrating and exhausting. Unfortunately, the parent with the most money tends to ‘win’.
