Marshall Winchester of North Carolina talks with a local reporter about his ‘retirement’ from the world of competitive spelling.

For the past three years, Marshall Winchester’s name has meant spelling bee. The home-schooler from Mineral Springs was a three-time contestant in the National Spelling Bee, finishing as high as fourth place in 2004. Marshall has since aged out of spelling bee competition, but he appears in the new book, “American Bee: The National Spelling Bee & the Culture of Word Nerds” and might have a cameo in the movie, “Akeelah and the Bee.” Staff writer Jennifer Rothacker spoke with Marshall, 14.
