Home-school students acting up with theater group, 7 November 2007, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Minneapolis, Minnesota

A group of home-school students performed “The Diary of Anne Frank” there under the direction of their “tutor,” a well-known youth theater director from Roseville who used to teach her own kids at home. These days, Carla Barwineck runs CB Productions, one of only a few theater companies in the metro area that serve the home-school crowd.

“I chose that because I felt it was a market that hasn’t been touched,” said Barwineck, who founded the SteppingStone Theatre Company in St. Paul and ran it for a decade. “It’s very unique because the parents are extremely involved with their children. The support there is very high.”

The theater stage at the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus doesn’t look much like a home-school classroom, but for a few days last week that’s exactly what it was.

The theater stage looks exactly like a “homeschool classroom” because not only is the world a stage, the world is a “classroom” (if places of learning have to have that designation).
