Kohlrabi Growers support home education for everyone

Herewith consist the abridged minutes of the regular April meeting of the Hamburg Kohlrabi Grower’s Association. It’s important to share what other people are thinking about hot-button issues. Even eccentric people like the Grower’s.

The next item of business dealt with support for parents who homeschool their children. This is a matter of prime interest since the Kohlrabi Grower’s feel strongly about education.

The Grower’s do not necessarily favor proposals requiring homeschoolers to report their names and addresses to the government. They are, nevertheless, concerned about children whose educational needs might be left behind by a few parents who are slothful or otherwise distracted by particular lifestyles.

Examples were cited about the “olden days,” when farm children learned everything they needed to know through hard work. Some loutish person rudely shouted a comment about levels of education in the hills of Appalachia.

A motion was made suggesting that homeschoolers develop their own homeschooling associations that would assure that homeschooled children are indeed being educated to an acceptable level. The associations could also monitor the quality of educational activities.

Then, realizing the potential intrusiveness of such legislation, the motion was further amended to recognize lifelong learning policies, which are central to the Kohlrabi Grower’s Association.

The motion now reads: “That all parents together with all other citizens be encouraged to recognize every opportunity to educate themselves and their children in any and every waking hour over and above any formal schooling provided in public, private and/or homeschool settings.” The Grower’s truly do believe in lifelong learning outside the classroom.
