From Saskatoon, Canada, the Star/Phoenix had a fun article [ Never a dull moment... Not when you have eight kids] about a homeschooling couple and their 8 children. The picture is entertaining in itself, of lawyer mom, Charmaine Panko, and her children on the first page. Yes, it really is impossible to make them all smile at the same time.
Charmaine, the lawyer, and Dez, the comedian, are proud parents of eight: Demi, 15, Devina, 12, Dyson, 10, Dominique, 9, Donal, 5, Desmond, 4, Dariusz, 2, and Dorian, nine months.
“There’s a lot of material for a show,” Charmaine says with a laugh. “We joke about it all the time . . . except that no one would believe it.”
Her co-worker adds this thought which occurred to me, but if the family wants it to happen, then they’ll make it work well.
Adds MacMillan-Brown: “I can’t imagine having eight kids and doing nothing but. That’s a 24-hour-a-day job right there.
But this family has the sense of humor and that has to be the part that makes it work in the best sort of way. Besides, shhhh, the secret might get out – being in a homeschooling lifestyle is SO much easier for many families than being on a public school schedule. (Picture getting the 5 year old ready for the 7 am bus.) Says Charmaine:
“I stick out like a sore thumb, because how many part-time articling students, now lawyers, with eight kids that home-school, that has a standup comedian as a husband, exist out there? But I’m really just average, normal, the same as these other people that do all these things that are the unsung heroes,” she says.
Best to the Panko family! I enjoyed reading about their life.
