Parade Magazine’s poll

The Sunday newspaper supplement, Parade Magazine, featured an mini-articlette (not sure where the dividing line between articles and paragraphs is drawn) titled, “Should Home-Schooling Be Illegal?”  The cited expert in the piece is Richard Kahlenberg, whose specialty is public education.

“If upheld, the California ruling will send shock waves nationwide,” says Richard Kahlenberg, the author of a number of books on education. He says the case “pits those who believe parental rights are paramount against those who place a premium on well-educated citizens.”

Mr. Kahlenberg’s implication seems to be that if parents homeschool, the kids will not be “well-educated citizens.”  Tell that to all the colleges who recruit homeschooled kids.

Oh, there’s a poll.  Homeschooling is doing well, but probably because so many homeschoolers are online, and connected to each other.  We also care to vote.  Others may not.  Take the result on the question, “Should parents need teaching credentials to home-school their kids?” with a shaker-full of salt as to actual opinion nationwide.

The reason for the piece is the recent unpleasantness in California.
