Homeschool Dad

A mis-titled ‘man bites dog’ report about a Georgia father who will be homeschooling his daughter.

Snellville dad quits job to become at-home teacher, 17 June 2008, Atlanta Journal Constitution, Atlanta, Georgia

David Kahl will soon add a new job title to his household résumé to go along with fun dad, the fix-it guy, the loving husband, the disciplinarian.

Kahl’s wife, Missy, 36, a cosmetologist at Pecan in Loganville, said she supports her husband’s decision to home school Kyra. Missy Kahl says her husband spends more time at home during the day and he’s the more patient parent.

“I work at the home,” Kahl said, “and I have time to do it.”

The reporter includes a reason for the switch to homeschooling for the family, and a defense by the principal of the school.  Nose-counting, and rule-following are included, which changes the focus of the report from ‘human interest’ to ‘social commentary.’  Overlapping Venn diagram circles are useful in portraying aspects of reality, but short written pieces usually confine themselves to the primary circle unless the intent of the report is to be a ‘compare and contrast’ piece about controversial subjects.  Is the subject of this piece ‘homeschooling’ or the family?

Still (despite the perceived shortcomings of the article), best of luck to the Kahl family.  Welcome to The Adventure.
