September-October 2011 – Unschooled Girl, An Unschooled View On Bullying

In her September-October column, Unschooled Girl, Kate Fridkis writes about bullying… Some people think that being bullied is a normal part of childhood. This grown unschooler is really glad that she didn’t have to go through it, and she thinks being homeschooled is a good way to avoid facing bullies. Unschooled Girl, An Unschooled View On Bullying by Kate Fridkis Once, a girl teased me about my nose. She said she had a friend whose plastic surgeon father could “fix that.” I was fourteen, and no one had ever said anything that mean to me, despite the fact that my nose had a bump on it. I stood perfectly still, unable to respond, and the homeschooled ten-year-old girls I’d been talking with sprang into action. “Her nose is beautiful!” “Leave her alone!” “Why are you so mean?” She was wearing a school uniform. A pleated skirt. The whole deal. We had never met her before today, and her brother was new to the homeschooling...

  • Intrinsic Motivations for Learning
“As homeschoolers we need to find ways to reach out to teachers and parents who don’t want to see childrens’ 12 years of compulsory schooling reduced to skills training for big business. Nurturing the human capacity to learn through love and intrinsic motivation is as important to life — to me, more important — as ‘learning for earning.’ Art, religion, music […]

  • Staying Informed
The issues facing homeschoolers today are fundamentally the same as 30 years ago when HEM was first published. While communication is easier the underlying social question is, can parents be trusted with their kids? Our political positions will support this answer in the affirmative. But this is not always the case nor is it always easy to understand the bes […]

  • Unschooling
Defining unschooling is a little like describing a color, and every bit as elusive. You can rely on commonly-held descriptions; for example, we generally all agree what blue looks like, but what about cobalt, aqua, navy, cyan, sapphire, azure, indigo, cerulean, turquoise or cornflower? It’s the same with unschooling. There’s a generally accepted definition, […]
