“America faces an emergency, and vested interests – including the interests of colleges – have to be set aside for the common good. The biggest obstacle blocking American progress is forced institutional schooling; the next biggest is forced college training, which promises far more than it can deliver.”
~John Taylor Gatto in The Dallas Morning News, May 29, 2005 John Taylor Gatto’s website

I received a copy of the article this quote is taken from this morning, from John himself, who wrote in the margin that this piece: “…would seem to resonate with the homeschooling perspective, and in any case is a provocative tale on an evergreen question. All Best, John”
This is a timely quote for us today – we found out that they’re holding a seat for our oldest child in his program of choice at the college he wants. I’m assuming by forced college training Gatto partly meant the expectation that kids have to go, and I’m glad my son is going because he *wants to* and he’s truly interested in the subject matter.
