HEM’s Online News, September 2005
Shay Seaborne, editor of HEM’s Online News, confesses in this issue:
I shouldn’t have gone looking. But a friend had mentioned that in relating genealogical information, his mother had confused the ancient city of Alexandria with Alexandretta (now called Iskanderun). I had never heard of Iskanderun, so I had to look it up. I Googled “Iskanderun,” and, oh, what I found!
Described as “a massive central data source and a handy way to graphically compare nations,” I discovered NationMaster, a Web site that is an info nympho’s dream. The exhaustive list of data sources includes: CIA World Factbook; USDA; United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Centre for International Crime Prevention; Transparency International; International Centre for Prison Studies; Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance; US Census Bureau; BBC; CBC; Wikipedia; Reuters; and numerous others.
