Families on the Road

I’ve always loved travelling! Whether by car or plane, boat or train, striking off for someplace new – or even a favorite old place – is always sure to put a smile on my face and a spring in my step!

“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” -Robert Louis Stevens

So I was delighted to come across a group of people who make a lifestyle of travelling: Families on the Road. Their extensive website carries the banner welcome: “The site for families who are on the road fulltime, on extended road trips, or are just dreaming about it.”

The FOTR site is filled with information, resources, support and more – check out the upcoming rallies, gatherings, conferences and other events for Families on the Road, and read about past events – or watch videos of them! You can “meet” many families who are lving on the road full-time through a page filled with links to their fascinating blogs and websites! Through that page you can find families like the “…normal, everyday, American family who happens to be following our dreams and chasing rainbows.”

They travel on bicycles, and they write wonderfully inspiring stuff like this:

“And we have learned the value of time. They say time is the greatest gift one can give their children. Time is why we made the decision to quit our teaching jobs and join the ever-burgeoning ranks of homeschoolers; we were tired of spending more time with other parents’ kids than with our own. So here we are – endeavering to spend as much time as we can with our precious children. Time is passing quickly. We can never go back. We can only take advantage of every moment we have.”

That’s heady stuff!

The site has polls (apparently weekly), and the results of last week’s poll are interesting:

The second week of April 7-15, 2007 we asked: How long is your family on the road? Total Votes : 115

* 12% – for one-two year(s)
* 11% – indefinitely
* 10% – part-time
* 3% – until we find the ideal place to settle
* 1% – semi-permanently “parked”
* 0% – been there, done that
* 38% – dreaming, planning and scheming
* 25% – only for vacations

There’s a Lifestyle section where questions about living on the road are answered, and the Resources section of the FOTR site is a goldmine for travellers, with plenty of nuggets laying around for the occasional adventure-seeker, and even some great ideas for those who never leave home, from gift ideas for RV families to buying your own RV. And of course there’s a collection on resources for ‘roadschooling,’ with plenty of information and inspiration for homeschooling.

There is a very active discussion group for Families on the Road, and a group for Unschooling Families on the Road, both linked at the FOTR site. I’m pretty well-travelled myself, but I’ve joined both groups to get ideas for future road trips with our grandkids!

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page” -St. Augustine

The Families on the Road site is maintained by Kimberly Goza, our old friend from the national touring troupe Activated Storytellers. But that’s another post!

(The quotes shared here are from the FOTR site.)
