Welcome to the Editor’s Blog for Home Education Magazine!
My name is Helen Hegener, and I’m actually the managing editor and co-publisher (with my husband, Mark). There are two other magazine editors, Carol Narigon (Articles) and Linda Dobson (Columns), and three newsletter editors: Shay Seaborne (HEM News), Ann Lahrson Fisher (HEM News & Commentary), and Mary Nix (HEM Support Groups News). We think we have the best editorial staff in homeschooling, working to bring you all the best homeschooling publications!
Actually, there’s a lot more to Home Education Magazine than publications. As our site banner notes, HEM is “More than just a magazine…” But this blog is my little corner of this whole big operation. This is where I share what I find most interesting, illuminating, notable, quotable, whatever – if it catches my interest, you’ll probably read about it here. I’ll strive to keep it interesting, and if you find something you think I should know about, please write and tell me!
Thanks for reading, and be sure to check out some of the other terrific blogs we sponsor – the handy menu on the left side of this screen will help you find them!

Glad to see you blogging and welcome to the blogosphere.
Thanks for the kind welcome, Andrea! I clicked over to your blog to see what’s up and noted one of my kids’ favorite old cookie recipes – doggoneit, now I’m going to be craving a batch of ‘em! My favorite variation is to add coffee to make them mocha-flavored!
Welcome to the blogosphere! It was just a matter of time, you know. Writing and blogging go hand in hand.
I thoroughly enjoy HEM and look forward to reading more from you here.
You’re right, Natalie, blogging is probably the most immediate form of writing we’ve come up with to date – putting one’s stuff out there to an appreciative readership with just a few quick clicks. What could be better? Maybe a Vulcan mind-meld…
Seriously, though, this is a form of immediate publishing. More so than, say, discussion lists, which are more about off-the-cuff discussion than actual writing. I’ve been giving some serious thought to what I might want to write here, and I’ve come up with several interconnected threads, the first of which I’ll start on with today’s first post: “The History of a Homeschooling Magazine.” Been wanting to write that for years now…
Helen,
I am so thankful I can explore what others are doing at home with their children. I also feel very strongly about protecting our children from being screened, labeled and drugged. 10,000,000 children in the United States are taking psychiatric drugs daily?! That is frightening.
Sincerely, Chel
